  • Am I eligible to be a CHAMPS mentor?  Once you apply, the University of Arizona Global Campus staff reviews each application to ensure the applicant meets the eligibility requirements. Mentors are required to have at least a 3.0 GPA (or have graduated with a 3.0 GPA) and have completed at least 24 undergraduate credits or 12 graduate credits at the University of Arizona Global Campus.
  • What am I expected to do? Mentors are expected to provide their mentee with about one hour of support and interaction per milestone (provided to you). Most of this interaction will take place by phone, email, Skype and other web-related services. Mentors should work with their mentee to determine which method of communication work best for each pairing.
  • What do the mentoring plans cover? There are several mentoring plans available through Champs designed to match the individual needs of our mentees with the unique academic and professional experiences of our mentors. Mentors will receive detailed training on each plan and will work with program staff to determine plan(s) they are eligible for. For more information about the mentoring plans, click here.
  • How long is the commitment? Each pairing will follow our program road map which consists of seven unique milestones. It takes an average of one hour per week with your mentee to reach each milestone. Mentors can expect to spend about 7 - 10 weeks with each mentee to complete the program.
  • How do I receive a mentee? If your application is approved, you will be invited to training and begin our new mentor onboarding process. Once your profile is ready to be published, you will be included in our next cohort for pairing.
  • What do I do if the relationship is not going well or I am concerned about mentorship? Letting your mentee know about the situation, and contact the Admin.  You will have our full support to resolve the situation in a positive and satisfactory manner.

Mentor DO's

  1. Commit to at least one hour per week with whom your connected.
  2. Take responsibility to initiate the relationship.
  3. Set aside time for the mentoring process and honor all appointments.
  4. Invite the mentee to meetings or activities, as appropriate. Schedule meetings with planned topics.
  5. Be flexible on meeting times and do your best to accommodate each mentee.
  6. Respond to emails from your mentee within 1 days of receipt.
  7. Keep information that your mentee has shared with you confidential. If something concerning the mentee needs to be discussed with others, it should first be discussed within the mentoring relationship.
  8. Establish open and honest communication and a forum for idea exchange.
  9. Foster creativity and independence. Help build self-confidence and offer encouragement.
  10. Provide honest and timely feedback to your mentee.
  11. Provide opportunities for the mentee to talk about concerns and ask questions.
  12. Most Importantly, LISTEN.

Mentor DON'Ts

  1. Try to give advice on everything.
  2. Encourage mentee to be totally dependent upon you.
  3. Provide your personal history, problems, animosities, successes, failures, etc unless they are constructive contributions.
  4. Be too busy when the mentee needs your friendship or your support. If you do not have time, give the mentee a heads up, so that they know when they can reach you.
  5. Criticize.
